The art world is buzzing in Chelsea this week as VOLTA New York kicks off. Several artists have been given the spotlight by their galleries this year with solo presentations.
Art Gallery O-68 is a gallery for contemporary art, which offers space to young and established (inter)national artists with. O-68, is featuring artist Wieteke Heldens who creates works using abstract visual forms and processes to explore systems of meaning and states of matter. After an accident in her early 30s, Heldens found herself in hospital in a critical state. It was then she started counting the colors she saw in her room. Upon returning to her studio, Heldens transferred her life-saving experience of counting colors into a new body of work, entitled ‘Legends.’
Wieteke Heldens will be displaying her most recent work from her “Still Counting” series, an evolution of the ‘Legends’ paintings, alongside Art Gallery O-68.
Another participating gallery is Catalysta, an online art space that features exclusively Latin American artists. This virtual space aims to give voice to artists of impeccable craft and discipline; a new generation of artists that understand and endorse the benefits of technology.
Catalysta is featuring Manuel Mera, a Dominican artist who specializes in painting and drawing, at VOLTA. Using photographs, memories, geometric patterns and anthropomorphic forms, he creates saturated imaginary spaces, scenes full of hidden narratives, satires, and ambiguous situations.
VOLTA New York runs May 17-21, 2023 at 125 West 18th Street.
